We recognize the sacrifice of black transwomen. Without these foremothers, the transgender community would not be where it is today. These women, who battled the intersections of racism, sexism, and homophobia laid the groundwork for the freedoms we enjoy today. Their legacy is still being built upon by other strong black transwomen who speak with power for so many of us today.
While the transgender community still faces discrimination that leads to secrecy, shame, and fear; we look to the bravery and courage of these women and honor their legacy in our community.
